The Arkansas Heritage Program is responsible for the development and management of the Natural Heritage Inventory. This dynamic database tracks the precise location and population status of rare species, along with the location and condition of natural communities within the state.

Staff utilize information from the Natural Heritage Inventory to identify Arkansas's most intact natural communities, as well as to locate rare species and their required habitat. Staff provide information to other governmental agencies, consulting firms, corporations, researchers, and students based upon a set fee schedule (Data Requests).

Arkansas Heritage Program staff also conduct surveys across Arkansas to locate and assess the condition of rare species and high-quality natural communities. Staff field surveys often result in the discovery of new populations of rare species or even species new to Arkansas. Results of survey work can be used as a gauge to determine the health and stability of rare species. Surveys also provide baseline data that can be used to identify high priority sites, develop conservation measures, and guide land management practices.
