ANHC Hosts Arkansas WeDigBio Events

Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission - Monday, September 28, 2020

The ANHC is hosting a WeDigBio transcription blitz this October 15-18!

WeDigBio, which stands for Worldwide Engagement for Digitizing Biocollections, is an event that encourages people worldwide to transcribe natural history specimens into a standardized format over a four-day period, called a transcription blitz. WeDigBio happens every year in October, and a WeDigBio Lite online event was hosted by the ANHC this past April.

This citizen science effort has in the past included local, in-person gatherings that provided volunteers with opportunities to see herbarium collections and ask questions of curators and experts. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s WeDigBio events will be a little different. Groups will meet virtually via the Zoom platform, with curators and experts offering presentations and transcription training events during scheduled online meeting times.

During the ANHC sponsored WeDigBio event, volunteers are encouraged to transcribe herbarium specimen data for the Plants of Arkansas Project on the online platform Notes from Nature (NfN). Online sessions offered this October include:

Visit the ANHC Calendar of Events for more information about dates, times, and to register for specific sessions. For more information about the Plants of Arkansas project on Notes from Nature and a document describing how to transcribe, please contact Diana Soteropoulos at [email protected] .
