Foti Receives Conservationist of the Year Award

Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission - Tuesday, July 31, 2018

Tom Foti, recently retired from the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, has been named the Harold Alexander Conservationist of the Year by the Arkansas Wildlife Federation (AWF). The award is the highest conservation achievement award presented by the AWF to an individual. The award is given to a conservationist whose contribution to an environmental field has been sustained over a period of several years; whose conservation contribution has made him known statewide (or nationwide); and whose activities and influence bring about positive changes in matters affecting the environment.

The AWF award was created in memory of Harold Alexander, one of the foremost authorities and experts in Arkansas on conservation activities. Alexander has been called “the father of Arkansas conservation.” The AWF was founded in 1936 to promote conservation, responsible management, and sustainable use of Arkansas’s fish, wildlife, natural resources, and outdoor recreational opportunities through education and advocacy.

Foti accepted the award at the annual AWF Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards Banquet. Every year, the banquet and awards ceremony honors individuals, organizations, and corporations who have gone “above and beyond” in the conservation of Arkansas’s wildlife and natural resources. The program brings awareness of conservation practices and projects to the public by recognizing Arkansas’s conservation leaders.

Foti served with the ANHC for 21 years, first as a plant community ecologist, and then as chief of Research, until he retired from full-time employment in 2006. Tom later returned to the ANHC on a part-time basis as a senior ecologist, in which he continued to advise and mentor staff, lead large-scale ecological research and restoration projects across Arkansas, and lend his experience to all kinds of natural resource issues. Foti officially retired from the ANHC in June 2018.

Read more about Foti on the ANHC website in a series of articles published in honor of his retirement “Tom Foti Officially Retires From the ANHC,” “Tom Foti Paved the Way for Today’s Partnerships,” “The Prairie That Tom Moved,” “Tom Foti’s Top Five Natural Areas,” and “Tom Foti’s Publications.” All are available on the ANHC website.
