Saratoga Blackland Prairie Natural Area

County Howard
Division West Gulf Coastal Plain
Acres 66.3886
Year Added 2004
Saratoga Blackland Prairie Natural Area, located in the West Gulf Coastal Plain, contains high quality blackland prairies and associated woodlands, with few non-native invasive species. The woodlands contain a diverse collection of mature hardwood trees; however, decades of fire suppression have impaired natural ecological processes and changed the structure of the plant communities. Based on experience at other natural areas, introduction of prescribed fire will rapidly restore the natural composition of prairies and woodlands to the area.

Directions

From Hope take State Highway 73 to Saratoga. Travel north on State Highway 355 for approximately 0.6 miles. Stay straight and merge onto State Highway 32, continue to Chapel Hill Road and turn right. The natural area is located at the end of Chapel Hill Road.
