Konecny Prairie Natural Area is the largest block of high-quality tallgrass prairie left in the Grand Prairie of eastern Arkansas (Mississippi Alluvial Plain). Konecny Prairie is dominated by big bluestem, little bluestem, switchgrass, and Indian grass. Forb diversity is high with such plant species as compass-plant, prairie gayfeather, rough blazing star, false aloe, and large coneflower being common. Prior to settlement, the entire Grand Prairie ecosystem covered approximately 900,000 acres, with more than 400,000 acres of that total consisting of prairie. Today, less than one percent of the prairie remains. A private landowner holds fee title to a portion of the natural area.


From Hazen, travel south on U.S. Highway 63 (old State Highway 11) for 10 miles to its junction with State Highway 86. Turn right on State Highway 86 and travel for 1 mile. Turn left onto a gravel road and travel 1 mile. Turn right onto a farm road. Prairie lies at end of the farm road. (Directions via Google)
