Warren Prairie Woodpeckers - Year One

Previous  |  Next

December, 14 2011

The re-introduction of federally endangered Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (RCWs) to Warren Prairie Natural Area continues to be a success! Two pairs reproduced this year and fledged two male birds. One of the males remained in his cluster as a helper, and the other set off and established his own territory in the natural area. The population grew again this year as two new pairs of subadult birds were released last month. The translocated birds were sourced from existing Arkansas populations at Pine City Natural Area, the Ouachita National Forest, and a Union County property owned by The Nature Conservancy (TNC). The birds were monitored, trapped, transported, and released by ANHC staff and partners. Pictured above left, ANHC’s Bryan Rupar monitors RCWs, and at right, ANHC’s Bill Holimon with a just-captured RCW; both at Pine City Natural Area. Now the birds are settling into their new homes. Look for updates early next year!
