Castanea pumila var. ozarkensis - Ozark chinquapin
Family: Fagaceae
| Status: |
Global Rank: G5T3 State Rank: S3S4 |
Habitat: Rocky dry to dry-mesic acidic forests.
Flowering Date: May - June
Fruiting Date: June - September
Causes for Concern: Ozark chinquapin is restricted to a narrow range in the Interior Highlands of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri (and possibly Alabama). Like the American chestnut (C. dentata), the Ozark chinquapin is subject to repeated killing of the stems by the chestnut blight. Fruiting trees and large individuals are rare. The Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission is primarily interested in fruiting trees and trees that appear to be unharmed by the blight.
Global Range: A widespread species within the Interior Highlands region of Arkansas; less common and less widespread within the uplands of southwestern Missouri and eastern Oklahoma. Historical relict populations may occur at the south end of the Appalachian Highlands in northern Alabama, but these may have been extirpated.
